Blogger labels and SEO
First of all, a notice to all frequent Celeb.Dump users: you can now access the archives of a certain celeb through the drop-down menu. The list under the drop-down menu leads to feeds and single posts (if that celeb doesn't have more than 1 post). Now I'll explain the reason for this duplication.
Blogger users have always used the labels to categorize their content. So far so good, but guess what: the label links are worth absolutely nothing in terms of SEO. For some reason, there is an exception of the search operator in Blogger's robots.txt (which only Blogger owners can access and modify) so if a blogspot URL has /search in it, Google will just walk away. This is the case with labels. At this point WordPress people will probably ROFL because THEIR categories often double keywords and strenghten the blog's SEO. Well I'm stuck at Blogspot I guess, the export tool is too buggy...
Anyway, some people tried to fool the system and create a landing post named after a category, where links to all the related posts would be stored. Then dump the labels, put simple text links to those landing pages and feel very smart. Good idea, but what if I've got about 500 categories (celebs) and almost 3000 posts? Am I fucked? I am.
I am fucked because I have a whole lot of old-fashioned manual human work to do: I have to substitute all my labels with textlinks to the FEEDS of these labels. To make the list for the first time is a stupid, tedious job and I still remember it with horror. I'd outsource it to India, but I wanted to test the results quickly and the Indian folks are quite slow usually. Maybe they have to crank on those one laptop per child thingies inbetween... And thank God I have a Mac so the damned thing didn't crash while I wasn't looking.
Anyway, Blogger Buzz provided the URL to the label feeds: http://celebdump.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default/-/alexis%20bledel where you should substitute celebdump with your blog name and alexis%20bledel with your label. (The label name in the link must exactly match your label, otherwise it will lead to a non-existant feed.) This way I create a sort of a sitemap, my index page (PR4) leads to all the labels that were fully ignored earlier. But that's not all. For celebs that only have one post I link directly to that post so those pages might get some of PR goodness. I don't know for sure, but my logic tells me posts with hardlinks from a PR4 page will be crawled and indexed better than posts that have been on that PR4 page for a week or so.
The downside of this solution is of course the manual part. If I add a celeb that is new to Celeb.Dump, add a new label, I have to edit the list and insert the link manually. If the celeb with one post gets another one, or even a few new, I have to edit that link so it would lead to the feed, not the one post, otherwise the new posts are kind of abandoned. Keeping up with that with new posts and celebs scheduled is not easy I'm telling you. Well at least Blogger does have scheduling.
And of course there is the risk that the users won't get it and will use the big list to navigate, which will mostly lead them to the feed. Not the worst case, but I'd like to keep them at the SITE, not feed, for their own better user experience too. It could've been much worse, if I had 1000 labels for example...
Because of all this I decided to keep the labels in the navigation, but not as prominent. They are still accessible and are probably still the best way for the users to see the content. But the SEO issue is far too important to ignore, so the structure will remain the way it is now.
My advice to Blogspot bloggers who care about SEO much: do the same thing! If you've got not many labels it's a peace of cake. Most celebrity bloggers are as fucked as I am though, hello carpal tunnel!
